Education Week
is an annual event celebrated by school boards and schools across the province.
It is a time for students, teachers and parents to celebrate teaching excellence
and student achievement. The theme for Education Week 2008 (April 28 - May
2) is Energizing Young Minds.
The following
are events planned at schools of the Rainy River District School Board:

- 20 Hour Famine
to support the local food bank
- Student Talent
Show
- Students designing
art plans for "Courage to Care" wall and Character Wall" in the cafeteria

for Nelson Mandela as a continuation of the Spirit of Mandela week

McNicoll - an author who will be touring the schools, sharing her books
and discussing being an author
Crossroads
- Flurry of
Fluency - Students are in cross graded groups to encourage community building
and caring for each other

- Display of students' writing

1, 2008 - Various activities for a half hour with a focus on buddy/shared
reading, and recording their name and the name of each book they read on
tornadoes to read "around" the school

community events will be held throughout the week that will be twinned with
celebration of First Nations activities
- Guests from
the community will be in the school for oral reading, judo demonstrations
and grass dancing
- Students will
partner with the community hall and assist with spring clean-up
Rainy
River High
- Focus of the
week will be the launch of a new fund raiser that will focus on the creation
of an elementary school for First Nations students of Attawapiskat, Ontario,
along the coast of James Bay
- Assemblies
and information sessions will be held on different days to disseminated
pertinent facts; rationale, target objective, and geographic location
- Program
will integrate with literacy initiatives as a letter writing campaign
will be initiated during one session
- Previous
school was destroyed by a local diesel spill that happened in 1979 –
since that time, the federal government has stalled in the building
of a new facility
Riverview
- The theme
"Character Development - Energizing Young Minds" is being adopted for the
week
- Each day a
specific character attribute will be identified and studied within the formal
curriculum: respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, empathy, and honesty
- Teachers assigned
roles to one another in connection with activities that will include an
intramural sport tournament, recycling, healthy active lifestyles, charitable
food drive, peer mediation, literacy buddy workshop
