Smart Kids

On Monday, January 10, 2005, a half-hour assembly was held at Huffman School to launch the Smart Kids video for the Rainy River District.  Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP) provided over 37,00 elementary schools in Ontario with a free copy of the Smart Kids safety video - a 50-minute video produced by Global Television in conjunction with the R.C.M.P. in 2001.

The Smart Kids video is hosted by a young man named Geoff with help from his sidekick "PAWS", the talking dog.  The duo is broken into segments highlighting several important safety issues for children such as:

·      Home Smarts – staying safe while home alone

  • Street Smarts – what to do when being followed or approached by a stranger

·      School Smarts – what to do if bullied at school

·      Internet Smarts – how to keep safe in a virtual world

Robin MacDonald of OTIP said, "All the material relates to the Ontario curriculum and teachers can integrate the video into their classroom and unit planning."  Teachers can download resource material at: http://www.otip.com/smartkids/lesson_resources_en.asp.
