Spirit of Mandela Week Celebrations

Schools of the Rainy River District School Board celebrated Spirit of Mandela Week from April 21-25, 2008 and raised money for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

Schools of the Rainy River District School Board participated in a variety of ways. The Spirit of Mandela was discussed during school assemblies. Individual classroom activities took place at some schools along with competitions to determine which classes could raise the most money for this initiative. Many schools also made morning announcements including quotes from Nelson Mandela.

The purpose of the Spirit of Mandela Event is four-fold:

  1. Educate Canadian youth about the history of South Africa and the challenges facing disadvantaged children and youth in South Africa.
  2. Reinforce the positive messages of Nelson Mandela's life, including: forgiveness, equity, freedom, justice for children and youth.
  3. Inspire Canadian students to get involved within their schools and communities, to help those who are disadvantaged, and learn how to make a difference in their communities through volunteerism and fundraising.
  4. Raise funds to help disadvantaged children and youth in South Africa through the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (Canada).
