PCAP 2007 Ontario Results April 2008
On April 28, 2008, EQAO will release the Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP),
2007: Ontario Reports for English- and French-language students. The results of this reading, mathematics
and science assessment place the province’s students among the top performers in the country.
The Rainy River District School Board Celebrates Education Week April 2008
Education Week is an annual event celebrated by school boards and schools
across the province. It is a time for students, teachers and parents to celebrate teaching excellence
and student achievement. The theme for Education Week 2008 (April 28 - May 2) is Energizing Young Minds.
Spirit of Mandela Week Celebrations April 2008
Schools of the Rainy River District School Board celebrated Spirit of
Mandela Week from April 21-25, 2008 and raised money for the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.

several schools within the Rainy River District School Board.

Premier's Awards For Teaching Excellence honour exceptional principals,
teachers and support staff. Nominations will be accepted until January 28, 2008, and award recipients
will be announced before the end of the school year.
SCAP Student has Top Business Plan Yet Again October 2007
It’s becoming somewhat of a tradition. For the fourth year in a row, a
student from the Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program in Stratton has captured first place in the business
plan competition for secondary students in the Kenora-Rainy River districts.

The OUTERS dedicate one day to community service each year and Project
Porchlight was very lucky to have the opportunity to tap into their enthusiasm.
EQAO cites North Star School as a “Success Story” September 2007
A long-term focus on literacy is paying off at North Star School.
And that was verified last week with the release of the results of the 2006-07 grade three and six
testing programs of the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).
Ministry of Education abc 123 website September 2007
Parents play an important role in helping their children build a passion
for reading. To assist parents of elementary school-aged students, the Ministry of Education launched
the abc123 website located at www.Ontario.ca/abc123. The site features fun and
practical tips for parents on how to get their children interested in reading, writing and
math.
Back to an improved school September 2007
After a major overhaul to Rainy River High School’s heating system and the
addition of air conditioning at a price tag of more than a million dollars, one would have thought that
would be the end of improvements to the school for some time. But this summer saw the Rainy River District
School Board invest approximately another $500,000 in the facility.
Local teacher helps improve education in the Caribbean August 2007
Although she’s heading back to the classroom next week to educate students
at Robert Moore School here, Grade 8 teacher Dana Kosowick got her own lesson this summer after
participating in “Project Overseas.”

Portfolio Night.
Donald Young School students learn about giving to others November 2006
Students at Donald Young School in Emo are
beginning the start of the Christmas season by learning about giving and sharing with others less
fortunate than themselves through two particular programs—filling Christmas shoeboxes and collecting money
for World Vision.
Board eyeing consolidation of Huffman, Robert Moore November 2006
With the Ministry of Education having designated three of its schools as potentially “prohibitive to repair”
(PTR), the Rainy River District School Board is moving forward with the PTR process and will be submitting a business case
to the ministry proposing the consolidation of Robert Moore and F.H. Huffman schools here.

Rainy River High School grade 12 student Brandon Gough has made it to the top of the heap in a North American writing contest.

2006 OTIP Teaching Awards February 2006
This is the third year that the Ontario Teachers' Federation (OTF), along with the Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP), has sponsored these teaching awards. There are three categories - Elementary Teacher, Secondary Teacher and Beginning Teacher for those in their first five years of practice.
The award nomination process is entirely on line. Deadline for submissions is March 27, 2006.

Lincoln M. Alexander Awards April 2005
Every year since 1993, the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration
and the Ministry of Education have presented the Lincoln M. Alexander Awards to honour young Ontarians
who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in eliminating racial discrimination. Show your support
for this awards program and take the opportunity to nominate a young person whom you believe is
deserving of this honour.The deadline for completed nomination packages is no later than June 10, 2005.
First Time Provincial Dialogue Yields Student Dividends April

The parties agreed that local contracts would be completed by June 1, 2005

Celebrating Literacy Across Canada January

On January 27, 2005, families across Canada will participate in
Family Literacy Day, a national initiative created by ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation and
supported financially by Honda Canada, to promote the importance of reading and learning as a family.
Smart Kids January 2005
On Monday, January 10, 2005, a half-hour assembly was held
at Huffman School to launch the Smart Kids safety video for the Rainy River District.
Ontario Parent Council December 2004
The Minster of Education appointed 20 parents to the Parent Voice in Education Project on November 6, 2004.
The mandate is to review parent involvement and provincial parent structures and to make recommendations to the Minister.
The Project has now met twice and they are in the final stages of preparing their consultation plan.
