EQAO Testing Results - Grade 3 & 6
May 2005
BACKGROUND:
The Education Quality and Accountability Office has been testing all Grade 3
students in Reading, Writing and Mathematics annually since 1998. Grade 6 students
have been tested in the same subjects since 1999. The tests occur over an intensive
five day period in May each year and results become available to boards and
schools in November/December.
In November, results for schools and boards were made public on the EQAO website.
REPORT:
Scores for the provincial tests completed in May, 2004, for Grade 3 and 6 students
of the Rainy River District are in and areas of strength as well as areas for
improvement have being identified.
In the six year period since 1999 Grade 6 results have shown steady increase and have surpassed or equalled the provincial standard.
The most encouraging picture provided by the results is the increase shown in Reading and Math by the same students who wrote the Grade 3 assessment in 2000 and the Grade 6 assessment in 2004.
Our success in Reading and Mathematics can be attributed to the continued emphasis on best practice supported by our co-ordinators, teachers and principals.
Our EQAO results in writing clearly show that improvement is needed in this area. Even though we have seen a steady increase at the Grade 3 level, our Grade 6 level indicates a decrease of 3% of students achieving the provincial standard.
The information below shows an analysis of achievement over the last six years.
Careful analysis of the results reveal that the Board results are certainly in line with the Provincial results. We continue to make steady progress, especially in the area of Mathematics and Reading. We will continue with current initiatives in these areas as well as promoting the strategies provided in the expert panel reports from the Ministry's Early Reading and Early Math Strategy. To address the lower results in writing we will:
