Reading Recovery Canada
We open doors to a literate future for children who initially struggle in learning to read and write.

Reading Recovery Works

Every child anticipates greatness. Yet for the lowest-achieving students, both experience and research tells us they are unlikely to become average readers without intensive teaching.

Reading Recovery is a short-term early intervention for first-grade students having difficulty in learning to read and write. Reading Recovery-trained teachers work one-to-one with the lowest-achieving students. Their results, reported to the Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery, are consistent across 20 years and include more than 188,500 Ready Recovery students.

Reading Recovery is thoroughly researched and proven early literacy intervention.

  • Reading Recovery students outperform control group students on multiple literacy tests measuring reading and writing abilities.
  • Achievement gaps are greatly reduced or closed across varying racial and ethnic groups, and English language learners.
  • Costly long-term remediation is eliminated for many children.
  • One-to-one tutoring with a Reading Recovery-trained teacher provides superior results to small-group intervention.
