Employment:

How do I apply for a position with the Rainy River District School Board? 

Teaching Positions:

Applications for teaching positions must include all of the following documentation:

  • A cover letter indicating the type of teaching position for which you are applying.
  • A current resume.
  • The names of two professional references, one of which must be from a current or recent supervisor). Please complete the Board's 'Reference Authorization Form' and submit it with your application package. Click here to complete the Reference Authorization Form (Word / PDF).
  • Relevant supporting documentation, such as your practice teaching reports.
  • A current copy of your Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) qualification.

All Non-Teaching Positions:

Applications for non-teaching positions must include all of the following documentation:

  • Documentation of credentials (e.g. copy of degree or diploma).

Teaching After Retirement from the Rainy River District School Board:

Please submit a letter of application and include the names of two professional references, one of which must be from your most recent Principal.   • We will advertise in local/regional newspapers and on our Board website when there are teacher vacancies. You are invited to apply for any vacancy of interest to you.

Criminal Background Check (CBC):

Why do I have to submit a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening before working for the Rainy River District School Board?

Effective January 1, 2001, Regulation 521/01 of the Safe Schools Act came into effect. This Regulation requires all current employees and service providers who come into direct and regular contact with students to provide a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening. Proof of a current Ontario Education Services Corporation (OESC) card is also acceptable.

Do the benefits that I carry with the Board provide travel coverage?
The Board has travel insurance. You can confirm the status of your coverage for this insurance before leaving the country by contacting Gabrielle Farrah in the Human Resources Department.

If you have travel insurance coverage, please ensure that you plan ahead by recording the contact information for the insurance coverage prior to your departure.

There are exclusions to the travel insurance coverage, so please ensure you review the plan completely before you travel. Details are available at www.manulife.ca/groupbenefits or by calling the Manulife Customer Service Centre at 1-800-268-6195.

Inclement Weather:

What do I do if I cannot travel to the school because of a snowstorm?
You are expected to make every reasonable effort to travel to your school. If you cannot safely travel to your school, you are expected to contact your supervisor and then travel to the closest school for further instructions about the duties for your day.

Training

How can I complete the on-line training requested by the Board?
The training modules will be assigned to you through the Safe Schools Training software. You will receive an email upon activation. Please remember to complete the training by printing your certificate. This is necessary to show that you have completed this training.

Workplace Violence Prevention

Does the Board provide training on Workplace Violence Prevention?
The Rainy River District School Board provides training on Workplace Violence Prevention upon hire and when it is determined that refresher training is required for all staff.  On-line training modules are used.  As well, particular employee groups receive classroom training as deemed appropriate, for example Educational Assistants are provided with BMS training on an ongoing basis.

How can I complete the Workplace Violence Prevention training module? This training module is now available through Safe Schools (Scenario Learning) software package. This module will be assigned to you upon hire.

Maternity/Parental Leave:

REQUEST MATERNITY/PARENTAL LEAVE

When can I request maternity/parental leave from the Board?
You must give the Board at least two weeks written notice before beginning your maternity/parental leave.

How do I ask the Board about maternity /parental leave?

Please use the attached Form Letter to show the date for the start of your maternity and whether you choose sick leave or Employment Insurance “top up” for 6 weeks. Attach the doctor’s note showing the expected due date for delivery of your baby.
 
 

What happens if my dates to start maternity leave are earlier or later than my original request?

Please send a new written notice to the Board with the revised date to start maternity leave. If the date to start maternity leave is changed to a later date, please send a new written notice to the Board with this revised date.
 

What if I choose to return from parental leave earlier than indicated in writing to the Board?

You must provide written notice to the Board at least four (4) weeks before the new earlier return date.

RECORD OF EMPLOYMENT (ROE)

When will the Board electronically send my record of employment (ROE) to Service Canada so that I can start Employment Insurance?

The Record of Employment (ROE) is electronically sent by the business office after your last day of pay by the Board prior to your maternity/parental leave. If you were on Board sick leave prior to the start of your maternity/parental leave, the ROE is issued after the Board pays your last sick day. Note: you will not receive a paper copy of this ROE.

SUPPLEMENTAL EMPLOYMENT BENEFIT (SEB)

What is Supplemental Employment Benefit (SEB)?

SEB is paid to eligible employees during the EI two week waiting period when an employee does not receive EI payments. The Board will pay 75% of normal weekly earnings for the two week waiting period for Employment Insurance (EI) benefit to eligible employees. Eligible employees shall provide evidence to the Board that a waiting period has been served (dates included) in order to receive payment from the Board for this waiting period.
If SEB occurs during the six weeks of EI top up immediately following the birth of your baby, the Board will 75% of the normal weekly earnings for the two week unpaid waiting period to eligible employees followed by 4 weeks of EI top up.
How will I receive payment from the Board for Supplemental Employment Benefit (SEB)?
Employees shall provide information to Human Resources that a specific two week waiting period was served in order to receive 75% of normal weekly earnings for the two week waiting period.
 

BENEFIT COVERAGE

How do I ensure that our new baby is covered by the Board benefit plan?

Please immediately contact Gabrielle Farrah, Human Resources Administrative Assistant and provide the full name and birth date of your new baby. Human Resources will then add your child to your existing benefit plan.

Will I receive board paid benefits while on maternity/parental leave?

Yes, if you had Board paid benefits prior to your maternity/parental leave, the Board will continue to pay these benefits during your maternity/parental leave. You will be contacted by the business office to clarify and confirm the benefits and premiums required during your maternity/parental leave.
 

SICK LEAVE BEFORE THE BABY IS BORN

Can I use Board sick leave if my doctor advises me to leave work for medical reasons prior the start date of maternity leave?

Yes, you may use Board paid sick leave prior to the birth of your baby if you are sick prior to the birth of your baby. Your supervisor may ask for a medical note to support this request for sick leave prior to your maternity leave.

Family Medical Leave:

Can I receive pay while I am away from work to care for a family member who has a serious medical condition where there is a significant risk of death occurring within twenty six (26) weeks?
You may apply for Family Medical Leave through Employment Insurance (EI) and, following approval, you would be paid by EI for up to twenty six (26) weeks.

Personal Emergency Leave:

I need to be away from my job with the Board for a family emergency. Is there an emergency leave that I could request through Employment Insurance?

Yes, this is called a Personal Emergency Leave through Employment Standards . You have the right to take up to 10 days of unpaid job-protected leave each calendar year due to illness, injury and certain other emergencies and urgent matters. http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/pubs/guide/emergency.php
