Religious Accommodation

The Rainy River District School Board is a system that delivers a quality learning experience to support high levels of achievement for each student in a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment. Educational experiences are designed to reach every student and to ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve their highest potential while feeling welcome and respected.

The Board has a Religious Accommodation Procedure in place to support all students. The Board acknowledges each individual’s right to follow or not follow religious beliefs and practices, free from discriminatory or harassing behaviours and is committed to taking all reasonable steps to provide religious accommodations to students.

If you anticipate that you or your family might require religious accommodation at any point during the school year we ask that you inform the administration at your child’s school as early as possible, preferably at the start of the school year. Areas that you might consider include, but are not limited to, the following:

Observation of major religious holy days and celebrations Accommodation in, or exemption from, specific areas of the curriculum or other school activities Religious attire Modesty requirements in physical education School opening and closing exercises Prayer Dietary requirements

You are also welcome to speak to your school administration about unanticipated religious accommodation needs as they arise.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding Equity and Inclusive Education, including Religious Accommodations, please contact your school principal or call the Education Centre.

The Rainy River District School Board’s Equity and Inclusive Education Policy 2.67 reflects the Board’s commitment to provide and maintain safe and healthy environments conducive to learning and working for all. The policy affects all areas of the board’s programs, guidelines and practices, ranging from curriculum and assessment to religious accommodation, creating a welcoming school climate and preventing discrimination and harassment.

Everyone has a right to be treated with respect and dignity, and to teach, learn and work in an environment that's free from discrimination and harassment. That is a core belief of the Rainy River District School Board. Our commitment to human rights isn't just the words of a policy—it must be demonstrated by our actions every day. Together, we share the duty to prevent and eliminate discrimination and harassment.
