OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN

Priority: To maximize every student’s opportunity to succeed.

Action Steps:

1.1 Establish and implement the literacy and numeracy plans to support Ministry of Education / Rainy River District School Board initiatives.
   
1.2 Explore opportunities to expand Achievement Schools concept based on results from 2004-05.
   
1.3 Develop flexible programming/timetabling to address student-centered needs.
   
1.4 Establish partnerships to support research based programming.




CLEAR AND FOCUSSED MISSION

Priority: To communicate our shared mission statement in all of our schools and communities.


Action Steps:

1.1 Ensure all events, documents, letters, signs, etc. will include our shared mission statement.
   
1.2 Increase signage inside and outside of schools.
   
1.3 Ensure schools use the shared mission, vision, and belief statements to align their School Improvement Plans throughout the District.
   
1.4 Increase partnerships with communities and local agencies to enhance learning opportunities and to communicate the Board mission.




SAFE AND ORDERLY ENVIRONMENT

Priority: To enhance our safe teaching and learning environments to maximize opportunities to learn.

Action Steps:

1.1 Support and implement Character Education (Safety-Trust-Attitude-Respect) Program.
   
1.2 Implement the Rainy River District School Board Accessibility Plan.
   
1.3 Develop a plan for the use of facilities in the Rainy River District School Board.
   
1.4 Implement and align Ministry of Education / Rainy River District School Board healthy living initiatives.
   
1.5 Complete the Security Access Device Initiative.




POSITIVE HOME SCHOOL RELATIONS

Priority: To strengthen communication with parents and to increase their meaningful involvement with the learning of children.

Action Steps:

1.1 Analyze the results of the pilot schools' invitational surveys and make recommendations.
   
1.2 Recognize and share areas of success throughout our schools and communities with the help of the Communications Department.
   
1.3 Conduct School Council sessions at east, west and central locations of the Rainy River District School Board.
   
1.4 Explore methods to increase effective home/school relations.
   
1.5 Post School Improvement Plans on Board and school website.




FREQUENT MONITORING OF STUDENT PROGRESS

Priority: To establish practices for monitoring, assessing, and reporting student progress to ensure school and student improvement.

Action Steps:

1.1 Implement data analysis tools and support to enhance decision-making regarding student achievement.
   
1.2 Develop a consistent system-wide student assessment policy by September 2006.
   
1.3 Develop / revise assessment resources for both elementary and secondary teachers.




CLIMATE OF HIGH EXPECTATIONS

Priority: Students and staff achievements are recognized and celebrated.

Action Steps:

1.1 To develop a culture of learning where all staff, students, parents and community members contribute to improving student achievement.
   
1.2 Ensure ongoing student success through professional development opportunities for all staff, parents and community members.
   
1.3 Develop and support programs focused on improving the achievement of students of aboriginal heritage.
   
1.4 Students and staff achievements are recognized and celebrated.
   
1.5 Create Professional Learning Communities throughout the system.
   
1.6 Fully implement a tracking system of performance appraisals for all staff.




LEADERSHIP

Priority: Enhance leadership development for sustainability of current and new leaders.

Action Steps:

1.1 Create and promote opportunities for student leadership.
   
1.2 Create and promote opportunities for staff leadership.
   
1.3 Provide a professional development program for current Principals/ Vice Principals and prospective leaders.
