Welcome to Rainy River District

Rainy River K-12, Childcare & EarlyON Child and Family Centre

Project Update

Class A Costing is complete. On October 11, 2019 the Approval to Proceed request for the project was submitted to the Ministry of Education. We are eagerly awaiting the reply in order to proceed to Tender. Architect is working diligently to finalize drawings so they are ready for the tender process. Discussions and permitting applications with the Town of Rainy River and the Chief Building Official are underway.

Looking Forward

  • Tender to be issued after approval has been received.
  • The renovation of the exiting gym into our new commons space will likely take place during Phase 1 or Phase 2 work and has yet to be determined.
  • All construction actives are planned to be completed by the summer of 2019 so that the school is open as a new K-12 facility for the 2019-20 SY.
  • Schedule updates will be provided as construction progresses.
  • A detailed floor plan will be posted once completed.

Progress to Date

  • Brook McIlroy was hired as the Architect.
  • Building committee was formed with meetings being held in November, December & May.
  • At these meetings we worked through the schematic design for the facility. See minutes below.
  • It was decided to change the scope of work from enclosing the courtyard for a student commons area and expanding the gym, we will instead build a new large gym and use the old gym as the student commons area leaving the courtyard as is.
  • Obtained a Class C Cost Estimate based on our new scope of work. This estimate shows our project at $11.4M. That is $1.3M more then the original funding approval received.
  • Sent the Ministry of Education Capital Branch the change in scope for approval in principal noting that we plan to fund the additional $1.3M required from our reserves using School Renewal funding. Final approval to proceed is not granted until we are done the detail design phase and have a Class A cost estimate prepared.
  • Obtained approval from the RRDSB on May 1, 2018 to allocate an additional $1.3M from School Renewal to the project.
  • Building Committee Meeting was held May 17th to review the results of the Schematic Design Phase.
  • Core Team met via WebEx with the Architect on June 6th.
  • Additional funding of $800,000 to expand the Best Start Space has been received on May 3 and will be incorporated into the daycare addition.

Background and Additional Information

The RRDSB Capital Priorities funding was awarded in August 2017 to renovate the existing Rainy River High School into a consolidated K-12 facility. The Childcare funding was received in May 2018 which altered the scope of the entire project and delayed the design work.

A joint proposal between the Rainy River District School Board and the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board for funding to construct new daycare's across the district was submitted in 2017 with our consolidated Rainy River K-12 School being awarded $1.6M to construct a 39 place daycare (15 toddler, 24 preschool) on the Rainy River K-12 School site.

Press release (Dec. 21, 2017) - Rainy River District School Board and Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board receive funding for Child Care

The project is currently looking at 3 phases:

  • Phase 1 is the renovation of the north wing of the school and the new administration area across from the science labs. During Phase 1, Rainy River High students and staff will be in the south wing of the school and using the existing administration space. Phase 1 is expected to continue to the end of the 1st Semester for the 2018-19 SY. Riverview students and staff will be in Riverview for the start of the 2018-19 School Year.
  •  Phase 2 is the renovation of the south wing of the school. During Phase 2, Rainy River High students and staff will be in the north wing of the school and using the new administration space.
  • Phase 3 is the construction of the new gym and renovation of the existing gym to our new student commons space. The new gym construction is scheduled to begin after the Riverview students have moved over to their new classrooms. This is when the construction of the childcare addition will be sequenced into the project.
