The Rainy River District School Board provides a range of services, supports, programs and placements for students with special education needs from K-12. Through inclusive practices, students' needs are met through a variety of supports and programs within both the elementary and secondary panels. All programs promote student independence and are optimally suited to meet students’ individual needs.

The Individual Education Plan (IEP)

Students with special education needs often have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that outlines the accommodations, strategies and supports that are in place within the school and classroom. In consultation with families, our team of caring and dedicated professionals provides a continuum of special education supports and services for exceptional learners. Together, classroom teachers, Special Education Resource Teachers (SERTs) and Administrators form the core of a student's school team.

Regular Class Placements

Most secondary students with special education needs are working on earning credits towards either the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or Ontario Secondary School Certificate (OSSC). Students access programming and supports through Regular Class placements (Indirect, Resource, and Withdrawal), with an appropriate level of accommodations and/or modifications to their program as outlined in their IEP. All of a child’s teachers assist students with accessing the curriculum expectations in accordance with the learning goals outlined in the IEP. Support is provided based on the student's needs. Information about the students’ learning profile is shared during the exchange of information/in-take process in preparation for the transition to high school.

Alternative Programming

Secondary students with very complex learning needs are enrolled in Alternative Programming Non-Credit courses, focusing on functional and vocational skill development. All alternative programming expectations are outlined in the student’s IEP. Students may complete their secondary school experience with a Certificate of Accomplishment or, if they are able to earn credits, an Ontario Secondary School Certificate. More information on Alternative Non-Credit Courses can be found on the Ontario Curriculum site at: https://www.dcp.edu.gov.on.ca/en/course-descriptions-and-prerequisites/appendix-d

The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)

Every school board in Ontario including the RRDSB has a Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) . The Committee provides important advice on special education to the school board, and makes recommendations on anything that impacts the establishment, development, and delivery of special education programs and services.
