Students at Robert Moore School participated in Jump Rope for Heart yesterday. Several RRDSB schools are joining the 4,000 schools across Canada to embrace the fundraiser that helps support the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Students at J.W. Walker helped open a time capsule yesterday that was buried at Alexander MacKenzie School 25 years ago. The children read the letters and saw pictures drawn by Diane DeBenedet's Grade 2 class.

From mechanics and baking to art and medicine, a variety of topics were highlighted at the Co-op Display Day at Fort Frances High School on April 27. Students taking part in co-ops at district businesses this semester used the event to showcase the skills they’ve learned on their respective job sites.

A seven-member team of Grade 7 and 8 students from Robert Moore School were among the 141 students who participated in the 21st Northwestern Ontario Association for Math Education Math Olympics at Superior Collegiate in Thunder Bay on Saturday .Corbin Riches placed second among all Grade 7 boys, while Grade 8 student Gavin Morrisseau finished in the top 10. Other teammates included Ingrid Ellis, Ayiana Gagne, Anna Gagne, Joyce Wu, and Olivia Eldridge.

Students from the Rainy River District School Board attended the Youth Embracing Diversity in Education (YEDE) Student Conference in Thunder Bay on Friday. Students gained a better understanding of equity issues and learned how they can make a difference with their actions, their ideas and their opinions. YEDE was presented by the Lakehead Public Schools Equity and Inclusive Education Implementation Network.

On April 20th, grandparents and special friends were invited to join North Star students for lunch. Over 250 people attended the event connecting school to very important people in children's lives. The students left the lunch very excited, proud, and full!!

The new Donald Young School wing is on track for a move-in date of June 23. With the building closed in and heated, the next two months of construction will consist of finishing work. The plan is to move everything into the new section during the week following the end of the school year. Grade 7/8 students at Sturgeon Creek School were challenged to make functional chairs from newspapers earlier this month. Teacher Robert Kinsman explained this was an activity challenge focusing on the “Structures: Form and Function” unit in science class.

The Rainy River District School Board has approved a modified school accommodation review to consider the future of Atikokan High School and North Star Community School. Administration has recommended that the two schools be consolidated into a new K-12 school on the Atikokan High School site. A community consultation is planned for May 18, with a final decision to be made in September. Check out the news articles published by the Atikokan Progress and the Fort Frances Times.
