Atikokan High School’s phys-ed and outdoor education programs have been given a boost by the Northwestern Health Unit. The school teamed with the ANFC and Atikokan Youth Initiatives to develop a Mountain Biking for Fitness program that won a grant to purchase new bikes through the Health Unit’s Northwest Strong Healthy Kids Community Challenge.

Natalie Panek has wanted to go to space ever since she watched Stargate SG-1 with her mom. She has degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering and currently works for MDA in the robotics and automation division on a team responsible for creating the chassis and locomotion system for the European Space Agency's Exo Mars Rover due to launch in early 2017.

As the School Board will not be able to provide a safe learning environment for students due to the strike actions of high school teachers on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, all instructional programs for Grades 9 to 12 will be cancelled, and all Rainy River District School Board high schools will be closed to students, with the exception of Grades 7 and 8 students at Atikokan High School.

Provincial representatives from the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF), representing secondary teachers and secondary occasional teachers in the Rainy River District School Board, provided notice on April 25, 2016, of strike action in the form of weekly full withdrawal of services one-day per week, commencing April 27, 2016.

The Rainy River District School Board is pleased to announce that it ratified an agreement with Rainy River District Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) – Educational Support Personnel (ESP) at its Special Board Meeting on April 20, 2016. ETFO ESP Local will vote on ratification of the agreement on Monday, April 25, 2016.

The International Day of Pink is an annual reminder that schools can be a difficult and unsafe space for many LGBTQ+ students. AHS has worked hard to mitigate that challenge through the GSA.

The tender for a new classroom wing to be built at Donald Young School in Emo was awarded to Finn Way General Contractor Inc. of Thunder Bay after being approved by the Rainy River District School Board at its Regular April 2016 Board Meeting.
