MPP Greg Rickford SpeakingFort Frances, Ont. – Ontario has approved the tendering of two new child care projects to make high-quality child care easier to access for families in Northern Ontario. The child care addition at Donald Young Public School in Emo and the child care retrofit project at Robert Moore School in Fort Frances will each create three child care rooms conveniently located in an existing school setting, and each will offer local families an additional 49 child care spaces.

Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines and Minister of Indigenous Affairs, shared the news today, on behalf of Minister Stephen Lecce, at the Robert Moore School in Fort Frances with Rainy River District Director of Education Heather Campbell.

“Additional child care spaces are great news for parents, children and caregivers in our communities,” said Minister Rickford. “Our government is listening to families and taking action to support them by investing in local schools and child care.”

Ontario is working to improve child care options for families across the province. Over the next five years, the government will invest up to $1 billion to create up to 30,000 child care spaces in schools – including up to 10,000 spaces in new schools.

As part of the 2019 Budget, the province also introduced the new Ontario Childcare Access and Relief from Expenses (CARE) tax credit which will provide about 300,000 families with up to 75 per cent of their eligible child care expenses.
