Employment:
How do I apply for a position with the Rainy River District School Board?
Teaching Positions:
Applications for teaching positions must include all of the following documentation:

A cover letter indicating the type of teaching position for which you are applying.

A current resume.

Criminal Background Check (CBC):
Why do I have to submit a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening before working for the Rainy River District School Board?
Effective January 1, 2001, Regulation 521/01 of the Safe Schools Act came into effect. This Regulation requires all current employees and service providers who come into direct and regular contact with students to provide a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.

Inclement Weather:
What do I do if I cannot travel to the school because of a snowstorm?
You are expected to make every reasonable effort to travel to your school. If you cannot safely travel to your school, you are expected to contact your supervisor and then travel to the closest school for further instructions about the duties for your day.

Training:
How can I complete the on-line training requested by the Board?
The training modules will be assigned to you through the Safe Schools Training software. You will receive an email upon activation.
Workplace Violence Prevention:
Does the Board provide training on Workplace Violence Prevention?
The Rainy River District School Board provides training on Workplace Violence Prevention upon hire and when it is determined that refresher training is required for all staff. On-line training modules are used. As well, particular employee groups receive classroom training as deemed appropriate, for example Educational Assistants are provided with BMS training on an ongoing basis.
How can I complete the Workplace Violence Prevention training module?
This training module is now available through Safe Schools (Scenario Learning) software package. This module will be assigned to you upon hire.
Maternity/Parental Leave:
REQUEST MATERNITY/PARENTAL LEAVE
When can I request maternity/parental leave from the Board?
You must give the Board at least two weeks written notice before beginning your maternity/parental leave.
How do I ask the Board about maternity /parental leave?
Please use the appropriate below-linked form letter to show the date for the start of your maternity and whether you choose sick leave or Employment Insurance “top up” for 8 weeks. Attach the doctor’s note showing the expected due date for delivery of your baby.

What happens if my dates to start maternity leave are earlier or later than my original request?
Please send a new written notice to the Board with the revised date to start maternity leave. If the date to start maternity leave is changed to a later date, please send a new written notice to the Board with this revised date.
What if I choose to return from parental leave earlier than indicated in writing to the Board?
You must provide written notice to the Board at least four (4) weeks before the new earlier return date.
RECORD OF EMPLOYMENT (ROE)
When will the Board electronically send my record of employment (ROE) to Service Canada so that I can start Employment Insurance?
The Record of Employment (ROE) is electronically sent by the Payroll office after your last day of pay by the Board prior to your maternity/parental leave. If you were on Board sick leave prior to the start of your maternity/parental leave, the ROE is issued after the Board pays your last sick day. Note: you will not receive a paper copy of this ROE.
SUPPLEMENTAL EMPLOYMENT BENEFIT (SEB)
What is Supplemental Employment Benefit (SEB)?
SEB is paid to eligible employees during the EI two week waiting period when an employee does not receive EI payments. The Board will pay 100% of normal weekly earnings for the two week waiting period for Employment Insurance (EI) benefit to eligible employees. Eligible employees shall provide evidence to the Board that a waiting period has been served (dates included) in order to receive payment from the Board for this waiting period.
If SEB occurs during the 8 weeks of EI top up immediately following the birth of your baby, the Board will pay 100% of the normal weekly earnings for the two week unpaid waiting period to eligible employees followed by 6 weeks of EI top up.
How will I receive payment from the Board for Supplemental Employment Benefit (SEB)?
Employees shall provide information to Payroll that a specific two week waiting period was served in order to receive 75% of normal weekly earnings for the two week waiting period. A screenshot of "My current claim" and "My Payments" from the EI website are required before top-up can be paid.

Will I receive board paid benefits while on maternity/parental leave?
Yes, if you had Board paid benefits prior to your maternity/parental leave, the Board will continue to pay these benefits during your maternity/parental leave. You will be contacted by the business office to clarify and confirm the benefits and premiums required during your maternity/parental leave.
SICK LEAVE BEFORE THE BABY IS BORN
Can I use Board sick leave if my doctor advises me to leave work for medical reasons prior the start date of maternity leave?
Yes, you may use Board paid sick leave prior to the birth of your baby if you are sick prior to the birth of your baby and we are unable to accommodate you to remain at work. Please submit a medical certificate to Alexandra Kozlowski in the Human Resources Department if you are absent for greater than 5 consecutive work days.

Family Medical Leave:
Can I receive pay while I am away from work to care for a family member who has a serious medical condition where there is a significant risk of death occurring within twenty six (26) weeks?
You may apply for Family Medical Leave through Employment Insurance (EI) and, following approval, you would be paid by EI for up to twenty eight (28) weeks.

Personal Emergency Leave:
I need to be away from my job with the Board for a family or personal emergency. Is there an emergency leave that I could request through Employment Insurance?
Yes, this is called a Personal Emergency Leave through Employment Standards . You have the right to access the following job-protected leave days each calendar year.
Sick Leave- 3 Unpaid days for personal illness, injury or other medical emergencies

Family Caregiver Leave:
I have a family member that needs support and care due to a serious illness. Is there a leave available to allow for this support?
Family caregiver leave is unpaid, job-protected leave of up to eight weeks per calendar year per specified family member.
Family caregiver leave may be taken to provide care or support to certain family members for whom a qualified health practitioner has issued a certificate stating that they have a a serious medical condition.

Critical Illness Leave:
I have a child that is critically ill. Is there a leave that I can access to support my child?
Critical illness leave is unpaid job-protected leave of absence of up to 37 weeks in relation to a critically ill minor child, or 17 weeks in relation to a critically ill adult within a 52-week period.

Crime-Related Child Disappearance Leave:
Crime-related child death or disappearance leave is an unpaid job-protected leave of absence. It provides up to 104 weeks with respect to the crime-related disappearance of a child.

Domestic or Sexual Violence Leave:
Domestic or sexual violence leave is a job-protected leave of absence. It provides up to 10 days and 15 weeks in a calendar year of time off to be taken for specific purposes when an employee or an employees child has experienced or been threatened with domestic or sexual violence. The first five days of leave taken in a calendar year are paid, and the rest are unpaid.

What is the EFAP Program?
Your Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) provides you and your significant others with immediate, confidential, and professional assistance for personal problems that may negatively affect your well being.

Medical documentation is required to be submitted for absences greater than 5 consecutive work days. OSSTF Teachers must submit a completed OSSTF Abilities Form. All other RRDSB Employees must submit a completed "Medical Certificate for Surgery" form, or a medical note that includes the same information as this form.

Who should I contact if I require accommodation at work?
Please contact your supervisor or the Human Resources Department (Alexandra Kozlowski) if you require workplace accommodation. You may also wish to involve your union representative. We will work together to gather the relevant information to support your needs. Solutions for workplace accommodation may include modified work duties, modified work hours, and/or assistive devices/tools.
Your medical restrictions/limitations that require accommodation, as well as recommendations to consider for workplace accommodation, can be provided by your attending medical practitioner on the OSSTF Abilities Form (OSSTF Teachers only) or the RRDSB Medical Certificate (all other employees).
We may develop a formal remain-at-work plan, gradual return-to-work plan, and/or an Employee Individual Emergency Response Plan for you.
