When can I request maternity/parental leave from the Board?

You must give the Board at least two weeks written notice before beginning your maternity/parental leave.

How do I ask the Board about maternity /parental leave?

Please use the appropriate below-linked form letter to show the date for the start of your maternity and whether you choose sick leave or Employment Insurance “top up” for 8 weeks. Attach the doctor’s note showing the expected due date for delivery of your baby.

What happens if my dates to start maternity leave are earlier or later than my original request?

Please send a new written notice to the Board with the revised date to start maternity leave. If the date to start maternity leave is changed to a later date, please send a new written notice to the Board with this revised date.

What if I choose to return from parental leave earlier than indicated in writing to the Board?

You must provide written notice to the Board at least four (4) weeks before the new earlier return date.

RECORD OF EMPLOYMENT (ROE)

When will the Board electronically send my record of employment (ROE) to Service Canada so that I can start Employment Insurance?

The Record of Employment (ROE) is electronically sent by the Payroll office after your last day of pay by the Board prior to your maternity/parental leave. If you were on Board sick leave prior to the start of your maternity/parental leave, the ROE is issued after the Board pays your last sick day. Note: you will not receive a paper copy of this ROE.

SUPPLEMENTAL EMPLOYMENT BENEFIT (SEB)

What is Supplemental Employment Benefit (SEB)?

SEB is paid to eligible employees during the EI two week waiting period when an employee does not receive EI payments. The Board will pay 100% of normal weekly earnings for the two week waiting period for Employment Insurance (EI) benefit to eligible employees. Eligible employees shall provide evidence to the Board that a waiting period has been served (dates included) in order to receive payment from the Board for this waiting period.

If SEB occurs during the 8 weeks of EI top up immediately following the birth of your baby, the Board will pay 100% of the normal weekly earnings for the two week unpaid waiting period to eligible employees followed by 6 weeks of EI top up.

How will I receive payment from the Board for Supplemental Employment Benefit (SEB)?

Employees shall provide information to Payroll that a specific two week waiting period was served in order to receive 75% of normal weekly earnings for the two week waiting period. A screenshot of "My current claim" and "My Payments" from the EI website are required before top-up can be paid.

Will I receive board paid benefits while on maternity/parental leave?

Yes, if you had Board paid benefits prior to your maternity/parental leave, the Board will continue to pay these benefits during your maternity/parental leave. You will be contacted by the business office to clarify and confirm the benefits and premiums required during your maternity/parental leave.

SICK LEAVE BEFORE THE BABY IS BORN

Can I use Board sick leave if my doctor advises me to leave work for medical reasons prior the start date of maternity leave?

Yes, you may use Board paid sick leave prior to the birth of your baby if you are sick prior to the birth of your baby and we are unable to accommodate you to remain at work. Please submit a medical certificate to Alexandra Kozlowski in the Human Resources Department if you are absent for greater than 5 consecutive work days.
