Employee of the Year awardAt its June 4, 2019 regular Board Meeting held at the Education Centre in Fort Frances, the Rainy River District School Board announced the recipients of the Recognition of Service awards, honouring the 2019 Employees of the Year, Bus Drivers of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Community Partner of the Year.

Jackie Dupuis-Brandli, librarian at Fort Frances High School, and Doug Olson, custodian at Crossroads School, were named Employees of the Year. Ms. Dupuis-Brandli was recognized for her friendly, helpful, and compassionate demeanor toward all staff and students at the school, as well as her work to ensure that the library is a welcoming and supportive environment for students. Mr. Olson was recognized for his hard work and dedication to making the school a better place, in addition to being an active and helpful member of the school community.

The Bus Driver of the Year awards were presented to Percy Champagne, who drives students to Nestor Falls School, and Greg Ferris, who drives students to Fort Frances High School and Sturgeon Creek School. Mr. Champagne was noted for maintaining a friendly, yet professional, relationship with the students he transports, as well as his investment to the school by attending school events. Mr. Ferris was acknowledged for demonstrating care for the students on his route and a concern for safety each day as he travels both the highway and rural roads.

Colleen Jolicouer, a parent at Rainy River High School, was named Volunteer of the Year. Ms. Jolicouer has dedicated four years to helping at the school. She has cooked, served, and supervised the semi-formal event, driven students to sporting events, and been a member of both school council and the prom committee.

The Community Partner of the Year was Hailey Coleman of the Northwestern Health Unit (Rainy River office). She was recognized for demonstrating a commitment to student wellness at schools in the west end of the District.  She never misses an opportunity to get involved in facilitating and leading programs that enhance the learning and participating of staff and students. Some of the activities she has participated in or brought to the schools include hand drum making, yoga for Kindergarten, fitness campaigns, vaping and concussion presentations, and providing healthy drinks for events.

Board Chair Raymond Roy noted the Selection Committee was pleased to see so many nominations submitted for the Recognition of Service awards this year and thanked those who took the time to nominate deserving individuals from their school communities.

“We are so grateful for the commitment and dedication of the staff, community partners, and volunteers in our schools who give of their time, energy and talent to support a wide variety of student endeavors both inside and outside the classroom,” said Mr. Roy. “They support and enhance the work of the Board; without them, many programs, activities and events just couldn’t happen.”
