You're the Chef Program earns Recognition of Excellence12/07/2017
Mine Centre School's “You’re the Chef” program earned the Rainy River District School Board's "Recognition of Excellence" at its December Board meeting. Back in June, the school submitted a proposal to the Healthy Kids Community Challenge - Northwest Strong in an effort to boost the fruit and vegetable intake of students there. The main component of the proposal was teaching children food literacy skills through the “You’re the Chef” program, which is a cooking program that focuses on encouraging lifelong healthy eating habits by introducing students to new foods (fruits and vegetables) through cooking. Food literacy skills include food and nutrition knowledge, skills in food preparation, and the confidence to apply the learning to influence dietary behaviour. Each class participated in a 90-minute cooking lesson, once a week for 4 weeks. Classes prepared a variety of healthy foods, including French toast with fruit salsa, yogurt and fruit parfaits, pizza wraps, pumpkin and apple muffins and much more. The “You’re the Chef” program supports many aspects of the curriculum, including literacy, numeracy, and science.
